Let’s talk…Language Comprehension

Children’s language and speech development therapy goes hand in hand with art therapy.

Language comprehension refers to understanding what is said.  Generally speaking, your child should understand everything you say directly to them.  Here’s a link to a quick developmental reference chart of what your child should understand:

If you think your child may not be keeping up with their comprehension development, the first thing is to talk to their pediatrician about both a hearing evaluation and a Speech-Language evaluation.

In addition to these assessments, there are some things you can do at home.

Point to show your child what you are talking about.

Gesture Add in some hand motions to enhance what you are talking about, such as eating (fingers to mouth) and hands out or should shrug when asking a question.

Show Go directly over to what you are talking about so your child can easily know; then say it again.  For example, if you are telling your child to get the ball under the table and your child doesn’t seem to understand, go to the table and show them the ball.  Encourage them to understand you by saying “Here’s your ball.  It’s under the table.  Come get your ball.”  Let them get the ball so they’ll start understanding your words.    Or, hold up two choices near your face, slowly saying  “Do you want an apple or a banana?”  They may tell you or look at the one they want.  Either way is fine.

You are teaching your child to understand, you’re not testing them.  Give them all the help they need to succeed!

Parent tip

Get down to your child’s eye level so they can directly see where you are pointing and what you are looking at.  It helps them to see your face.

Repeat what you say a few times, or say it a different way.  Speaking in short sentences can help them understand the key words of what you are saying. Be sure to give them time to think about it though before you repeat or rephrase.
